American Chemistry Council
Contents
The ACC is an industry trade association for American chemical companies. It was founded as the Manufacturing Chemists' Association (1872-1977), then known as the Chemical Manufacturers' Association (1978-2000).
Lobbying
Plastics: The ACC is lobbying to influence USA trade negotiations with Kenya, pressing for Kenya to abandon its plastic bag ban, and to continue imports of foreign plastic garbage. In 2019, the USA exported 1+bn pounds of plastic waste to 96 countries including Kenya, ostensibly to be recycled - but instead it ends up in rivers and oceans. The AAC sees Kenya as the entry-point into Africa for USA-made chemicals and plastics. The Fossil Fuel Industry is worried that Climate Change will force the world to stop burning fossil fuels.[1]
Between 1998-2005, the AAC hired 19 firms to lobby the Federal Govt on its behalf. In 2003, it had 15 firms on retainer. It has employed 146 lobbyists itself or through firms (62 during 2003), 36 of whom formerly worked for Congress or the Federal govt.[2]
