Non-Governmental Organisations

  • A non-profit, voluntary citizens' group, independent of govt, organised on a local, national or international level.
  • Task-oriented and driven by people with a common interest; perform a variety of service and humanitarian functions, bring citizen concerns to govts; advocate and monitor policies; and encourage political participation through provision of information.
  • Funding: usually by donations, but some avoid formal funding and are run by volunteers.
  • Legal status: voluntary association; trust, charity, foundation, not-for-profit company, formed under special NGO or non-profit laws.
  • Tax status: may have charitable status, or may be tax-exempt in recognition of their social purpose.
  • May be a front for political, religious, or other interests; for example, the World Economic Forum is a lobby group for corporations.
