Identical twin brothers, David Rowat Barclay and Frederick Hugh Barclay, have very substantial business interests primarily in media, retail and property. They ranked 17th on the Sunday Times Rich List 2019, with estimated wealth of £8bn.[1]

Shop Direct Ltd is a multi-brand online retailer and financial services provider. The group includes the Littlewoods, Very Exclusive and Very.co.uk brands.[2]

Property

The Ritz Hotel London, built by Swiss hotelier César Ritz in 1906. The building is neoclassical in the Louis XVI manner, built to resemble a stylish Parisian block of flats.

  • May.25.2018: £25m ‘loan’ to Barclay brothers hits Shop Direct. The Barclay brothers could not properly explain why £25m had been paid to their holding company. Shop Direct described it as an "intercompany loan". Shop Direct management revealed that they do not control a central treasury that decides how much cash the company sends to its owners. Attempts by the Barclay brothers, owners of the Daily Telegraph, to obtain a £1bn VAT windfall from the British taxpayer, are leading to criticism of the way their offshore commercial empire is structured. The much-delayed broadcast of an investigation by the BBC's Panorama programme into the Barclays' tax affairs focuses on the Ritz hotel, another of their assets. The hotel in London has paid no corporation tax for the past 17 years by legally claiming reliefs. Yet the Barclays are engaged in a lengthy legal battle to obtain a £1bn VAT refund.
