The BVCA is a trade organisation for the private equity and venture capital industry in the UK. Founded in 1983, it has 700+ member firms, including 300+ fund managers and 120 institutional investors, as well as institutional investors. ref

For more than three decades we have represented the industry and delivered authoritative research and analysis, proprietary publications, specialist training, topical conferences and best practice standards.
Our membership comprises more than 700 influential firms, including over 300 private equity and venture capital houses, as well as institutional investors, professional advisers, service providers and international associations. We work together to provide capital and expertise to growing businesses, to unlock potential and to deliver enhanced returns to the millions who directly and indirectly invest in our industry.
The BVCA exists to connect all of the internal components of the private equity and the venture capital industry - investors, fund managers, entrepreneurs and companies, advisers and service providers - to each other, and to represent their interests to government, parliamentarians, officials and regulators, the media, other sections of the business community and society at large.
In the early eighties, the BVCA's primary objective was to secure recognition from the government and policy organisations. Today, governments and policy makers at home and abroad seek our opinion on a wide range of issues - regulatory, fiscal, technical and legal - as the BVCA has become the respected voice representing a world-class industry, as well as a model for new and existing national private equity and venture capital associations across the globe. ref

Transparency

Walker Guidelines

In February 2007, the BVCA asked Sir David Walker to undertake an independent review of the adequacy of disclosure and transparency in private equity, with a view to recommending a set of guidelines for conformity by the industry on a voluntary basis. This review resulted in the publication of the Guidelines in November 2007. The Guidelines require additional disclosure and communication by private equity firms and their portfolio companies when certain criteria are met (see Appendix 3). ref
Every year, the Private Equity Reporting Group (PERG) publishes a report on compliance, with a sample of 33% of all portfolio companies that fall within the scope of the Guidelines.
The BVCA requires compliance with the Guidelines from its members, as a condition of membership.
