Institutional Shareholder Services is a proxy advisory firm. ISS is paid by hedge funds, mutual funds and similar organisations that own shares of multiple companies to advise (and often vote their shares) regarding shareholder votes. It is the largest such firm, with over 61% of the business. It was owned by MSCI until Apr.2014, when it was purchased by Vestar Capital Partners LLC. In 2017, ownership of ISS switched to private equity firm Genstar Capital LLC.
