  • 1728: William Newton, then later Thomas ]emson, took over the coffee house and Lloyd's List business after Edward Lloyd died in 1713. Thomas Jemson, together with several other coffee house proprietors, first conceived the idea of a responsible, accurate and specialist business newspaper – but their scheme came to nothing.
  • Sept.1696: Lloyd's News: Edward Lloyd began publishing a newsheet, which was devoted mainly to trade and maritime news. Publication ceased in Feb.1697 when the English Crown took offense to an item.
