Telefónica is a Spanish multi-national broadband and telecommunications provider, headquartered in Madrid, Spain. It has operations in Europe, Asia, and North, Central and South America. It is one of the largest telephone operators and mobile network providers in the world. Telefónica was the 110th largest company in the world, according to Forbes.ref, May.2017

Telefónica UK Ltd, t/a O2 in the UK, is the largest mobile network operator in the UK,[2] followed by EE, Vodafone and Three.[Feb.2020]

  • Feb.2021: Fined: O2 UK overcharged exiting pay-monthly customers by £40.7m between 2011–2019; OfCom fined it £10.5m.[3]
  • May 2020:

    it was announced that Telefónica had agreed to merge Telefónica UK with Virgin Media, Liberty Global's subsidiary, into a 50/50 joint venture. If the deal is approved, the merger will be completed in the middle of 2021.[4][5]
  • 2008: Telefónica Europe plc: the company was renamed again, becoming the holdco for Telefónica's UK operations.[6]
  • 2007: Telefónica O2 Europe: O2 plc was renamed.

    Telefónica SA acquired O2 plc.[7] Under the terms of the acquisition, Telefónica agreed to retain the "O2" brand and the company's UK headquarters.[8]
  • Mar.2005: O2 plc: mmO2 plc restructured its shares, and the company was relisted as "O2 plc".[9]
  • Nov.2001: mmO2 plc was listed on the London and New York Stock Exchanges.[10]
  • Oct.2001: mmO2 plc: BT Wireless, BT plc's mobile operations, was demerged and renamed as "O2 Ltd",OpenCorporates-sm.svg with the holdco renamed as mmO2 plc.OpenCorporates-sm.svg BT Cellnet, along with other former BT subsidiaries: Esat Digifone in Ireland, Viag Interkom in Germany and Telfort Mobiel in the Netherlands, were all rebranded as "O2".[11] The chemical symbol for oxygen, O2, was chosen by BT Cellnet along with its sibling companies, as being ‘modern and universal’.[12]
  • Jun.2000: BT Cellnet launched the world's first commercial General Packet Radio Service. BT Cellnet, together with BT Group's mobile telecommunications businesses in Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands, together formed the BT Wireless division.

    BT Cellnet: BT plc acquired Securicor's shareholdings in Cellnet, rebranding it as "BT Cellnet".[13] The company became a part of BT Wireless.

    Cellnet was formed as a 60/40 joint venture between British Telecommunications plc and Securicor. Cellnet was a subsidiary of the JV holdco, "Telecom Securicor Cellular Radio Ltd".
