Allianz is a European financial services company headquartered in Munich, Germany. Its core businesses are insurance and asset management. It is the world's 2nd largest insurance company, as of 2017 ref.

Asset Management

The asset management division is comprised of PIMCO and Allianz Global Investors.
  • 1998: Allianz Asset Management: Allianz created a separate asset management business by integrating all of its major asset management businesses under one roof.
  • 2000: PIMCO Group, including NFJ Investment Group and Oppenheimer Capital, was acquired (USA).
  • 2001: Nicholas-Applegate.
  • 2001: Dresdner Asset Management Group, including Dresdner RCM Global Investors, was purchased (Europe).
  • 2009: Integration of Cominvest into Allianz’s German asset management arm.ref
  • 2011: The integration of Allianz’s asset management businesses (ex PIMCO), following a decade of growth, paved the way for AllianzGI to become a globally integrated investment manager.
  • 2012: Allianz restructured its asset management division into two discrete investment management businesses: PIMCO and Allianz Global Investors.

PIMCO

PIMCO, Pacific Investment Management Company LLC, is a global investment management firm focusing on active fixed income management. Headquartered in California, PIMCO manages assets for central banks, sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, corporations, foundations and endowments and individual investors around the world. As of Mar.2019, the firm had 17 offices throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia.

PIMCO was established in 1971 as a subsidiary of Pacific Mutual Insurance Company (now "Pacific Life Insurance Company") to sell separate management services for employee benefit plans, endowments and foundations. In May 2000, Allianz AG purchased a majority stake in PIMCO's parent, PIMCO Advisors LP, now known as Allianz Global Investors of America LP, leaving Pacific Mutual with a minority interest of 3%. Although Allianz had a 97% stake, PIMCO continued to operate autonomously.ref

Allianz Global Investors

Allianz Global Investors operates as a global investment management firm, offering portfolio management and advisory services to individuals, institutions, trusts, private funds, charitable organisations, and investment companies. The firm has 20+ offices worldwide. ref

Allianz Capital Partners

ACP are Allianz's in-house asset manager for alternative equity investments, and are part of Allianz Global Investors. ACP focuses on private equity and essential public services in infrastructure and renewables. Offices are located in Munich, London, Luxembourg, New York and Singapore.ref, Website

  • 1970s: Allianz was Europe’s largest insurance company.
  • 1922: Allianz Life was founded, and soon became one of Germany’s largest life insurers.
  • 1920s: By the beginning of the decade, the company offered all property insurance policies typical of the times.
  • 1890: Allianz Insurance started business in Berlin.
