BBSRC is the largest UK public funder of non-medical bioscience; it predominantly funds scientific research institutes and university research departments in the UK.

The BBSRC is guided by the Technology Foresight priorities, which emphasise the need for research that encourages wealth creation. It commits those it sponsors to "integrating scientific opportunity with the needs of industry". De-fluffed, this means that biosciences' research direction has been made increasingly dependent on both corporate investment and commercial relevance.
