CNPC is a major national oil and gas corporation of the People's Republic of China, and is the 3rd largest integrated energy group in the world. Its headquarters are in Beijing.

CNPC is the govt-owned parent company of publicly-listed PetroChina, which was created in Nov.1999 as part of the restructuring of CNPC. CNPC and PetroChina develop overseas assets through a joint venture, the "CNPC Exploration & Development Company" (CNODC), which is 50% owned by PetroChina.

PetroChina Company Ltd

PetroChina is the publicly-listed arm of CNPC, and is China's second biggest oil producer. PetroChina was established as a joint stock company with limited liabilities under the Company Law of the People's Republic of China (the PRC) in Nov.1999, as part of the restructuring of CNPC. In the restructuring, CNPC injected into PetroChina most of the assets and liabilities of CNPC relating to its exploration and production, refining and marketing, chemicals and natural gas businesses. PetroChina Company Ltd is a China-based company principally engaged in the production and distribution of oil and gas. The Company mainly operates through four business segments. The Exploration and Production segment is principally engaged in the exploration, development, production and sales of crude oil and natural gas. The Refining and Chemical Products segment is principally engaged in the refining of crude oil and petroleum products, as well as the production and sales of basic petrochemical products, derivative petrochemical products and other chemical products. The Sales segment is principally engaged in the sales of refined petroleum products. The Natural Gas and Pipeline segment is engaged in the transportation and sales of natural gas, crude oil and refined petroleum products.
