The EFF is an international non-profit digital rights group based in California. The foundation was formed in Jul.1990 by John GilmoreWikipedia-W.svg, John Perry BarlowWikipedia-W.svg and Mitch KaporWikipedia-W.svg to promote Internet civil liberties.

The EFF provides funds for legal defense in court, presents amicus curiae briefs, defends individuals and new technologies from what it considers abusive legal threats, works to expose government malfeasance, provides guidance to the government and courts, organizes political action and mass mailings, supports some new technologies which it believes preserve personal freedoms and online civil liberties, maintains a database and web sites of related news and information, monitors and challenges potential legislation that it believes would infringe on personal liberties and fair use and solicits a list of what it considers abusive patents with intentions to defeat those that it considers without merit.

The EFF also provides tips, tools, how-tos, tutorials, and software for safer online communication.

Privacy Badger

Privacy Badger is a free, open-source, browser add-on that stops advertisers and other 3rd-party trackers that do not respect the Do Not Track setting in your browser, and nevertheless secretly track where you go and what you look at.ref

How Privacy Badger Works: A webpage is often made up of content from multiple (sometimes dozens) sources: the content from the website; ads from advertising companies; pictures from another website; comments from another company; and so on. Privacy Badger keeps track of them all and, as you browse the web, if the same source seems to be tracking you across different websites, then Privacy Badger springs into action, telling your browser not to load any more content from that source, so it can no longer track you. Voila! To the tracker, it's like you suddenly disappeared.ref

  • Feb.07.2018: John Perry Barlow, Internet Pioneer, 1947-2018. With a broken heart I have to announce that EFF's founder, visionary, and our ongoing inspiration, John Perry Barlow, passed away quietly in his sleep this morning. We will miss Barlow and his wisdom for decades to come, and he will always be an integral part of EFF. Twitter post: "Major parts of the Internet…exist and thrive because of Barlow’s vision and leadership. He always saw the Internet as a fundamental place of freedom, where voices long silenced can find an audience and people can connect with others." Cindy Cohn, EFF.
