Froneri is the 2nd-largest manufacturer of ice cream in the world, and the largest manufacturer of private label ice cream globally. It has operations in Europe, Egypt, South Africa, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, Philippines, Israel, New Zealand and the USA. As well as ice cream, it also produces frozen food and chilled dairy products.

Froneri is a 50%/50% joint venture between French private equity firm PAI Partners SAS and Nestlé SA. Although Froneri Ltd is registered in the UK, its parent company "Froneri Lux Topco Sarl" is incorporated in secretive tax haven Luxembourg.[1]

  • Dec.2011: Durigon Gelato GmbH, an ice-cream manufacturer based at Schwanewede-Brundorf near Bremen, was acquired from its family owners. Durigon made products for both its own and the private label market.[11]
  • Jun.2010: Rolland SAS, France’s 3rd largest ice cream manufacturer, was acquired from the Rolland family.[12] The acquisition meant R&R became Europe’s 2nd largest ice cream group in terms of supermarket sales in the UK, Germany and France.[13]

    Richmond Foods Ltd: American vulture capital firm Oaktree Capital Management LP bought Richmond Foods plc via an investment vehicle "Ruby Acquisitions Ltd".[14] The Office of Fair Trading approved the acquisition.[15] Richmond was delisted, and re-registered as a private limited company.
  • 2005: Skinny Cow, the UK’s first indulgent tasting yet low fat ice cream brand became part of the Richmond family and soon delivered significant incremental retail sales.
  • Apr.2004: De Roma Ice Cream, a Wigan-based firm, was acquired from its receivers.[16] Increased the group’s ability to produce lollies, hand held ice creams and Arctic rolls.

  • 1997: Richmond completed a reverse takeover of the publicly-listed ice lolly manufacturer Treats Group plc, based in Leeds, which gave them the Crossgates site and far greater leverage in negotiations with supermarkets.[5][3] The deal meant that the newly formed entity was publicly listed.[5]

  • 1987: the company's first major success occurred when it won a contract to manufacture own-label ice cream for supermarket chain Morrisons, which had 44 stores at the time.[4][5]
  • 1985: Richmond Ice Cream was founded when Yorkshire farmer Jonathan Ropner bought Cardosi, a Thornaby ice cream manufacturer.[3] Cardosi had £40,000 of ice cream manufacturing equipment, and had offered itself up for sale.[5] Ropner asked his friend James Lambert to join him.[19],[4] Lambert claimed that the pair knew "nothing" about ice cream manufacturing.[5] The company initially had just five employees.[1]
  • ?date?: James Lambert ended up working for a friend of his parents, who ran Herdwise, a cattle breeding firm. It became the country's biggest private supplier of bull semen to dairy farmers and later expanded into making own-label ice cream. Renamed Richmond Foods, the then 27-year-old Lambert got the job of running it. He built it up via the acquisition of Windsor Creameries, then engineered a reverse takeover of Treats, a struggling ice lolly business that floated in 1996 but saw its sales hit by a bad summer.[19]

The Roncadin group was one of Europe's largest producers of frozen food with a wide range of products in the ice cream, pizza, bread and ready meals business lines. Roncadin was the first in Europe to produce stone-baked pizza with quality very similar to pizzeria products.

  • Jan.2006: Schröer Eis GmbH, based in Haltern, was acquired. Based in Haltern (NRW), the company had one of the most modern production facilities for stick and ice cream in Europe.[20]

    Oaktree Capital Management LP, an American private equity firm, acquired Roncadin SpA's European Ice Cream business. The Ice Cream division is Europe's third biggest ice cream manufacturer with operations in Germany, France and Poland. Arena Holding SpA, Roncadin's parent company, was reportedly forced to sell off the profitable ice cream operation because of debts. (See Notes in Talk page.)
  • 2004: Zielona Budka, the 3rd-largest ice cream producer in Poland, was acquired. Also during the year: an exclusive retail co-operation deal with Glacio in Belgium; and the purchase of licence and production rights for Valensina fruit ices and Fit For Fun healthy ice creams brands.[20]
  • 2003: Arena Holding SpA, an Italian food company, acquired ~28% shareholding in Roncadin, becoming the relative majority shareholder. Subsequently, Arena increased its stake to 32%, triggering a mandatory takeover bid, a preparatory act for a reverse takeover which would allow Arena to list on the Milan Stock Exchange.[21] The subsequent increase in the shareholding to 32% triggered a mandatory takeover bid, a preparatory act for the subsequent reverse merger that would bring Arena to the Milan list.   • 1964: Edoardo Roncadin, Regina's nephew and the youngest of three brothers born in Fiume Veneto (Pordenone), decided to emigrate to seek his fortune in Germany. The immediate success of the first ice-cream parlour was followed by a chain throughout Germany during the 1970s.[20]
