  • Jun.2006: John Fleming & Company Ltd, a Scottish builders and timber merchant with seven branches, was acquired and integrated into the Buildbase network.
  • 2006: he paid a reputed €18m to buy the 80% of Dun Laoghaire Marina that he didn't already own. One of the best marinas in the country, it was highly profitable in the early years.[21]

Overall Heiton Group plc has over 50 trading locations (six in the UK), an average of 1,900 employees and a turnover in excess of €500 million.   • Jan.2004: § Heiton Buckley, Ireland’s largest independent plumbers merchants, was acquired.[22]
  • Oct.2003: Plumbline, a Dublin-based plumbers merchants chain and Scotland's largest independent plumbers merchants, was purchased from its founders, David Miller and Danny McKinlay. Established in 1988, the plumbers merchants division traded as "Plumbase" in the UK. It also operated builder wholesaler and DIY divisions.[23]

  • Jun.1997: Abbey Rose & Company Ltd,OpenCorporates-sm.svg a builders supply company in Peckham, London, was acquired. Abbey Rose was a family business established in 1957, supplying heavy side building materials to customers in the London area. The trade and assets were hived up into Buildbase Ltd.[25]
  • May.1997: British Dredging plc:OpenCorporates-sm.svg a minority stake of 24.93% (subsequently rising to 29.87%) in the UK chain of builders and plumbers merchants, was acquired from Redbird Holdings SA.[26] In Apr.1998, Grafton acquired the other 70.13%. Then, in Aug.1998, Grafton sold its 50% stake in British Dredging Aggregates Ltd,OpenCorporates-sm.svg to RMC Group plc (formerly Ready Mixed Concrete Ltd), the other 50% holder. The 50% stake was held by British Dredging plc, which Grafton acquired in Jun.1998. Prior to the bid for British Dredging, Grafton had a 29.9% stake in the publicly-quoted British company.[27] The sale did much to defray the cost of acquiring the 70.1% outstanding stake in British Dredging plc.[21] The business operated 23 locations, incorporating 17 builders merchants, including § Selco Trade Centres Ltd, and 6 plumbers merchants. The deal substantially expanded the UK merchanting operations, and was the first time an Irish company had acquired a listed UK plc. Selco went from strength to strength.[28]
  • 1997: The group added a further 14 locations through six small but significant acquisitions and achieves critical mass in its UK operations.

Heiton Buckley is the largest builders and plumbers merchant and also the largest steel stockholder in the Republic of Ireland.   • May.1997: Sam Hire Ltd, the No.1 plant and tool rental company in the Republic of Ireland, was acquired. Established in 1979, Sam Hire operated through 12 branches, with an extensive range of 450+ product lines.[37]
  • 1996: two single-store businesses in the Northeast and Southeast of Ireland wre acquired to plug geographic gaps in the network.[37]
  • 1994: F & T Buckley Ltd's holdco, F & T Buckley (Holdings) Ltd, a competitor, was acquired from Harrisons & Crosfield plc, a UK public company. The acquisition proved to be a significant event, propelling Heitons from No.2 to No.1 in the building materials market.[37]
  • 1989: Atlantic Home Care Ltd, a large-scale multi-product Homecare/DIY retailer, was acquired via its holdco, Atlantic Home & Garden Centre Ltd. The move took Heitons into the arena of direct sales to the general public through large retail outlets known as “sheds”.
  • 1973: The business divested its coal business. Changes in the demand and acceptability of coal as a major fuel source meant adapting, with the company re-focusing on builders’ merchants, steel, DIY and subsequently hire.[37]
  • 1967: Heiton McFerran Ltd: merged with McFerran & Guilford, which added plumbing and timber to the product offering.
  • 1960s: Identifying changing patterns of energy use, made a strategic decision to move into the Builders Merchant and Steel Stockholding business, adding an ‘Iron’ department.[37]
  • post-WWII: BM & S: Heitons developed the Builders Merchants business, initially creating a nation-wide chain of wholesale supply centres.
