Brakes, formally "Brake Bros Ltd", is a European foodservice business, supplying fresh, refrigerated and frozen food products, as well as non-food products and supplies, to foodservice customers ranging from large customers, including leisure, pub, restaurant, hotel and contract catering groups, to smaller customers such as independent restaurants, hotels, fast food outlets, schools and hospitals, via ~70 distribution centres.

The group has two distinct types of business, divided into 3 geographic regions.

  1. broadline, which offers a range of food products across multiple categories and temperatures to customers;
  2. specialist, which focuses on a particular type of product category.

Fresh Direct Group Ltd: Bain Capital entered into a JV with Fresh Direct to create a new fresh food company. Brakes' subsidiaries M&J Seafood, Pauleys and Wild Harvest became part of the new entity, and Fresh Direct placed into Fresh Holdings Ltd. CMA clearance was received in Feb.2015.[5] The new company is jointly owned by Bain Capital and Nigel Harris, a Fresh Direct owner.[6]
2014 Constellation: Brakes joined forces with two of the largest foodservice wholesalers in Italy and Finland to form a new buying group. The alliance gave Brakes greater purchasing power to achieve lower prices across a wide range of products.[7]

Mar.2001 Wicketts, the bacon and ham processing business, was sold to Roach Foods Ltd. As part of the transaction, Brake Bros acquired Roach Foods' local food wholesaling business, Roach Frozen Foods.[21][18]

France: acquired six member businesses of the Carigel Buying Group: Szymczak Nadreau SA, Valette SA, Bertello SAS, VDL Surgeles SA,[22] Dipa SA, and SBA SA.[23] Bianchi Gers SA (Jan.2002) and Produits Sélectionnés de Mulhouse/Jarny Glace (PSM/Jarny) (Mar.2002), were also acquired; as a result, the group became a 75% majority shareholder in the Carigel buying group.[18]

1999 Bayliss & Sons, a small fish wholesaling business serving London and the home counties, was acquired.[28]
1998 Gelou, a regional frozen food home service business, was sold. The company had formed part of the DRV Group acquisition.[28]

Beginnings

1969 Brakes Manufacturing, t/a "Twin Chef Foods", was established as the in-house food manufacturing operation, producing frozen ready-made meals and desserts.[31]
Oct.1961 Brake Bros. (Poultry Packers) Ltd was incorporated.[30]
1958 Brakes was established by William, Frank and Peter Brake as a poultry supplier to caterers in Great Britain.[24]

Woodward Foodservice Ltd

Woodward Foodservice supplies frozen foods, grocery, and chilled products to the catering industry in the UK. The company, founded as a family business in 1957, is part of Brake Bros Ltd, which was acquired by Sysco Corporation in Jul.2016. Woodward Foodservice ceased to trade in Dec.2009 when its trade and assets were hived up into Brake Bros, and was dissolved in Jun.2019. It exists now purely as a brand.

dbc Foodservice Ltd, a food distributor with a network of 13 warehouses throughout the UK, which had a juicy Ministry of Defence contract as part of the Purple Foodservice Solutions Ltd consortium,[33][34][35] was acquired from Danish Crown AmbA by WF Group Holdings Ltd with the aim of merging the two companies.[13] The merger was not a success.
In Sept.2008, when the Woodward business was sold to Brake Bros Ltd, dbc Foodservice did not form part of the transaction, but was later sold to WPD Holdings Ltd/WPD Ltd for £1 in Apr.2009 (owned by Iceland officers Malcolm Walker, Andrew Pritchard and Tarsem Dhaliwal).[36] After a ~£5m loss in 2011, followed by ~£6m in 2012,[37] dbc Foodservice and its parent company went into administration, and were dissolved.[38]dbc: HistoryArchive-org-sm.svg
