BASF is a German chemical company, and the largest chemical producer in the world. The group comprises subsidiaries and joint ventures in 80+ countries, operating 6 integrated production sites and 390 other production sites in Europe, Asia, Australia, the Americas and Africa. BASF is one of the world’s largest suppliers of plastics.ref Sales break down as follows:

  • 34.2%: Functional products: performance materials (35.7%), catalysts (34.8%), coatings (18%) and construction chemicals (11.5%);
  • 26.3%: Chemicals: petrochemicals (41.8%), inorganic products (39.2%), and intermediate products (19%);
  • 25.3%: High-performance materials: dispersions and pigments (33.5%), care chemicals (31.1%), performance chemicals (24.7%) and nutrition products (10.7%);
  • 9.8%: Agrochemicals;
  • 4.4%: Other.

Their forecast for 2018 included the agreed acquisition of significant parts of Bayer’s seed and non-selective herbicide businesses, which is expected to close in the first half of 2018. See also [1]
They also intend to merge their oil and gas activities with the business of DEA Deutsche Erdoel AG and its subsidiaries. ref

BASF continued to be included in the MSCI ESG Ratings in 2017 with a score of AA. MSCI made special mention of BASF’s leading environmental protection programs.ref

  • Oct.2013: Jobs/Restructuring: the entire workforce at the Hawkhead Road factory was axed as production was moved to South Korea. The factory was formerly operated by Ciba-Geigy, and then Ciba Specialty Chemicals, before being taken over by BASF and renamed to BASF Performance Products plc.ref
  • Mar.2010: BASF Schweiz AG: Ciba was renamed.ref
  •  ??.2009: BASF Performance Products Ltd: Ciba Speciality Chemicals's name was changed when almost all of the Ciba businesses were integrated into BASF's Performance Products division.
  • Apr.2009: BASF completed the acquisition of Ciba Holding AG, and integrated it into the BASF group.ref
  • Sept.2008: BASF: Ciba Speciality Chemicals's board of directors agreed to a takeover offer from BASF, the world's largest chemicals company.ref
  • 2007: Ciba Inc: Ciba Speciality Chemicals was renamed.

  • Mar.1996: Novartis: Sandoz and Ciba-Geigy announced plans to merge into one global life sciences group, forming Novartis. Part of the merger agreement was that Ciba-Geigy's industrial chemicals business would be spun off, which led to the formation of Ciba Specialty Chemicals plc.ref,ref
