  • Jul.24.2018: The UAE Lobby: Subverting British democracy? Chatham House is one of the UK’s oldest and most respected international affairs think tanks, an essential cog in the Britain’s foreign policymaking process. Its experts and senior staff brief diplomats, parliamentary committees, MPs and journalists behind closed doors. In 2015/16, it received between £50,000—£99,000 from MbZ, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, in addition to funding from the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs of £10,000—£24,999. A further sum of ~£9,999 was given by the UAE’s London Embassy in 2016-17. London lobbying company Quiller, which aggressively pushed the UAE’s agenda from 2011-15, compiled research on two prominent Chatham House academics whose output the UAE didn’t like; neither now hold positions. Quiller alleged Maha Azzam was a Muslim Brotherhood sympathiser. Quiller also singled out Omar Ashour, who criticised the UAE-backed 2013 coup in Egypt and the UAe’s intervention in Yemen; Ashour didn’t have his associate fellowship at Chatham House renewed in 2017. The guest list at Chatham House’s annual London conference held in Oct.2017 was made up of high-profile speakers and guests from Saudi Arabia and the UAE, but not from Qatar. Chatham House vigorously denied that it was open to influence from any govt for financial or any other gain. SpinWatch.
  • Feb.11.2015: Should the UK frack for gas? ... It also triggers concerns that once a fracking industry is in place, it will displace future renewables. “If gas replaces coal, that’s great," says economist Paul Stevens. "But if it starts to push out renewables, it's no good. We need a Marshall plan for developing low carbon options." He is a strong proponent of increasing energy efficiency and cutting consumption. "For the average UK citizen, changes can be incremental." His group is drawing up lists of ways in which the nation can cut back on its fossil fuel addiction, and calculating the impact of those changes on national emissions. Early results, he says, are promising. Linkback: Fracking Catherine Brahic, New Scientist.
