  • Apr.30.2018: Western lobbyists linked to smears of Iceland boss Richard Walker. Malaysian palm oil interests that are behind attempts to smear the boss of Iceland are working with two western lobbying companies connected to Big Tobacco and pro-Brexit groups. Malaysia's palm oil industry is funding a highly personal social media campaign against Richard Walker, one of the supermarket chain’s managing directors. One of those acting for Malaysian palm oil interests is DCI Group. The Malaysian palm oil industry is also working with Media Intelligence Partners. Keith Newman, a DCI Group vice-president based in Brussels, is listed as the media contact for the president of the National Association of Smallholders Malaysia, one of the organisations that funds Faces of Palm Oil. Mr Newman gave a speech on "palm oil acceptance through proper branding" at a conference in 2015 and met a Conservative MEP in 2012 to discuss palm oil in Malaysia. This year Bloomberg Businessweek magazine published an investigation into DCI Group's work on behalf of hedge funds engaged in a debt dispute with Argentina. The piece concluded that "billionaires are using DCI Group to make their bets pay off". Corporate Europe Observatory, a transparency campaign group, said that DCI Group was notoriously private about its work in Brussels, despite having an office within half a mile of the European Parliament. According to a complaint submitted by CEO to the European Commission in 2013, DCI Group had connections with an organisation called the European Privacy Association which, despite its name, lobbied MEPs to be cautious about restricting the ability of tech companies to use customer data. The EPA, it turned out, was funded by companies including Facebook, Google and Yahoo. Matthew Moore, The Times.
