In Dec.2015, Dow Chemical Company and Du Pont de Nemours Inc announced a merger, under which the two companies would combine in an all-stock merger of equals transaction. The merger was completed in Aug.2017, and both Dow and DuPont became subsidiaries of DowDuPont Inc.

The new company DowDuPont will eventually be split into 3 publicly-traded companies, each with a particular focus:

Corteva Agriscience will unite Dow and DuPont's seed and crop protection divisions.
Dow Materials Science will consist of DuPont's Performance Materials + Dow's Performance Plastics, Materials and Chemicals, Infrastructure and Consumer Solutions
DuPont Speciality Products will include DuPont's Nutrition & Health, Industrial Biosciences, Safety & Protection and Electronics & Communications, plus Dow's Electronic Materials business.

Chemours Company Inc: in 2013, facing ongoing litigation over its inexcusable environmental pollution since 1954, DuPont spun off its "Performance Chemical" division (Titanium dioxide, Fluoroproducts, and Industrial chemicals), together with all associated liabilities, as the Chemours Company Inc. Chemours began operations as an independent company in Jul.215, and indemnified DuPont for the majority of its environmental liabilities.ref, p.2 Chemours was set up for bankruptcy, with $4 bn in debt and unsustainable dividends.
With the Dow merger in view, and concerned that a court might too easily transfer the environmental liabilities right back to DuPont, Chemours was propped up by DuPont prepaying $190m for goods, while Dow Chemical bought the aniline business for $140m - corporate CPR, if you will.
It is clear that the entire purpose of the spinoff was for DuPont to get rid of its environmental liabilities, which promise fair to continue for years to come. Post-merger with Dow, the plan is to create 3 separate companies - a legally impenetrable black hole, leaving small Chemours as the fall guy. If the Courts have any morals and/or sense of responsibility, they will not allow this planned escape to succeed.ref, ref.


  • Nov.2017: Health & Nutrition business purchased from FMC Corporation, except for the Omega-3 business. In return, DowDuPont divested to FMC of a portion of DuPont’s Crop Protection business. The acquisition was integrated into DuPont Nutrition & Health. DuPont also completed the divestiture of its Cereal Broadleaf Herbicides and Chewing Insecticides portfolio to FMC. The divestments satisfies DuPont’s commitments in connection with regulatory clearance of the merger with Dow.[1]
  • Sept.2017: DowDuPont restructure:
  • Aug.2017: DowDuPont: Dow Chemical Company and EI du Pont de Nemours & Company merged, creating the the largest agricultural pure play company in the country. The combined entity is operating as a holding company under the name "DowDuPont" with three divisions: Agriculture, Materials Science, and Specialty Products.[2]

Corteva Agriscience After Pioneer was spun out of DowDuPont in Jun.2019, Pioneer became Corteva. Corteva Agriscience encompassed DuPont Pioneer, DuPont Crop Protection and Dow AgroSciences LLC after it becomes a standalone company.ref

DuPont Pioneer is a developer and supplier of plant genetics; it combines conventional plant breeding with biotechnology and emerging areas of science. Pioneer sells corn, soybeans, sorghum, sunflower, alfalfa, canola, wheat, rice, cotton, pearl millet and mustard seed, as well as forage additives and a variety of services and expertise. In the UK and Ireland, the core products are forage maize, silage additives and oilseed rape. ref, ref, ref

  • Jun.2020: PhytoGen Seed Company LLC: Corteva Inc announced an agreement with JG Boswell Company to purchase its ownership interest in PhytoGen Seed Company LLC, a joint venture between the two companies. PhytoGen Seed Company LLC was formed to focus on the USA cottonseed industry.   • Mar.2019: MoU with China: Corteva Agriscience signed an Memorandum of Understanding with the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, outlining principles for collaboration in areas including partnership in technology development, advancing best applications in the field, elevating agronomy skills and building a model for sustainable development in rural areas.[4]
  • Mar.2019: Royal Barenbrug Group agreed to acquire Corteva Agriscience’s minority share in Barenbrug Holding BV, set up in collaboration in Jun.2012. Barenbrug will acquire Corteva Agriscience’s Brachiaria tropical grass seed business developed with Barenbrug Holding BV.[5]
  • May.2018: Seed Consultants Inc expanded its regional presence, becoming the Eastern Corn Belt regional brand for Corteva Agriscience. Seed Consultants Inc, based in Washington C.H., Ohio, specialises in corn, soybeans, wheat and alfalfa specially developed and tested for the unique soil types and growing conditions of the Eastern Corn Belt.[6]
  • Feb.2018: Corteva Agriscience: DowDuPont's Agriculture Division announced the name of the intended company once it is spun-off, expected to happen by Jun.2019. Corteva Agriscience brings together DuPont Crop Protection, DuPont Pioneer and Dow AgroSciences to create a standalone agriculture company. The name is derived from a combination of words meaning "heart" and "nature".[7] Corteva will go to market through five regional corn and soybean seed brands in the USA, including Dairyland Seed, Hoegemeyer, NuTech, Seed Consultants and Terral. Brodbeck, Curry, Doebler’s, Pfister and Prairie Brand will be combined with the five regional seed brands. Pioneer will remain the company’s global flagship seed brand. The U.S. retail channel will be served primarily by Mycogen and Terral. The company will maintain the AgVenture network of regional seed companies and will continue to sell cotton seed through its Phytogen brand, and alfalfa through Alforex.[8]

What is indisputable is that PFOA and PFOS are part of a group of man-made chemicals that have been tied to a range of health effects, from obesity in children to reproductive problems and cancers. Used to make Teflon, stain- and water-resistant coatings, cosmetics, and hundreds of other products, PFCs (perfluorinated chemicals) persist in the environment and are easily absorbed by the human body. Both PFOS (perfluorononanoic acid) and PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid), the best studied of these chemicals, have been shown to be "endocrine disruptors", tiny amounts of which can interfere with the hormonal system.ref

  • Jul.2015: DuPont spun off its chemical division into a separate company called § Chemours. If cleanup costs are ever levied for the C-8 DuPont leaked into the larger environment, possibly for many $billions, then little Chemours will take the hit for its parent.
  • 2014: The EPA fined DuPont $10.5m plus $6.25m for environmental projects ref. The question of why the EPA did not fine the maximum $300m it could have, remaines unanswered. The total $16.5m penalty was a tiny fraction of the $6.4 bn in annual sales that DuPont’s chemicals division was enjoying at the time.
  • 2013 (A): A team of 10 scientists found 12 new PFCs contaminating the river water downstream from the DuPont/Chemours plant. All showed the same characteristics as C-8. And GenX was among them. ref
  • 2013 (B): The C-8 Science Panel completed its work. They found connections to 6 chronic diseases and cancers. Their results also tolled the death knell for the widely-held belief that the dose makes the poison. This idea was one of the foundation stones of modern toxicology. Recent studies have tied C8 to a wide range of health effects, including ovarian and prostate cancers; lymphoma; reduced fertility; arthritis; hyperactivity and altered immune responses in children; and hypotonia ("floppiness") in infants.
  • 2009: DuPont introduced new chemicals to replace C-8; the "Capstone" line of surfactants and repellants - all owned by Chemours, of course. Little is known about them since their chemical make-up is proprietary. Since 2005 the FDA has approved at least 10 "fluorochemicals" to replace C-8 in food packaging, but there is little public record of health risk assessments being performed on them.
    One such is GenX, which causes many of the same health problems in lab tests that C-8, including cancer and reproductive problems. DuPont/Chemours scientists found that rats given GenX developed tumours, but dismissed them as "not relevant for human risk assessment". Meanwhile, they continued dumping waste into the river. Like C-8, GenX does not biodegrade, and does bioaccumulate.

  • Sept.2004: DuPont agreed to settle the class-action lawsuit for $343m. Part of the agreement was the creation of the C-8 Science Panel to collect medical information on the exposed population and determine whether exposure to C8 had actually harmed people.
  • 1951-2003: 1,133,981 kgs of C-8 were released into the air and water around the plant; of this, 286,670 kgs were dumped directly into the Ohio River.
  • 2002: DuPont invested $23m in a new facility to produce C-8.
  • 2001: DuPont quickly settled the case for an undisclosed $sum. But the cat was out of the bag; 80,000 people filed a class action lawsuit against DuPont.
  • May.2000: 3M decided to stop making C-8. DuPont started planning to produce it in a new plant.
  • 2000: Documents revealed that DuPont were well aware that C-8 had seeped into local water; they had been documenting it since 1954 - nearly 20 years.
  • 1999: A cattle farmer sued, suspecting that his cows had been poisoned after they drank from a C8-polluted stream and died. DuPont did not disclose that they had dumped 3,220 kgs of C-8 sludge into a nearby landfill; instead, they tried to blame the farmer, saying it was his failure in not looking after his cattle proporly.
  • 1994: C-8 was now polluting the Netherlands and Japan, as well as in the USA.
  • 1991: Not only did C-8 exposed rats have a higher chance of developing testicular cancer, but the way in which tumours developed could apply to humans. A press release was drafted: "DuPont and 3M studies show that C-8 has no known toxic or ill health effects in humans at the concentrations detected". The same year, DuPont changed their analytic laboratory; oddly, the new results on C-8 levels were then much lower.
  • 1989: DuPont found a high number of leukemia deaths at their West Virginia plant. They also found a high number of kidney cancers among male workers. Both problems were plant-wide and not specific to workers who handled C-8.
  • May.1984: Corporate managers decided not to try to reduce C-8 pollution, because it "was not economically attractive"; instead, they prepared a media PR guide. Usage of C-8 increased; and so did its polluting waste and emissions.
  • Mar.1984: DuPont collected environmental samples up to 127 km away; the results confirmed C-8's presence at high levels.
  • 1981: 3M shared the results of another C-8 study on pregnant rats, whose unborn pups were likely to have eye defects. DuPont imediately transferred all women out of work assignments with potential for exposure to C-8. They then tracked a group of women who had been exposed to C8; and found 2 children with serious eye defects.
    3M submitted their study results to the EPA; DuPont scientists told the EPA the study was flawed. They did not disclose what had happened to their own workers.
  • 1979: DuPont was aware of studies showing that exposed beagles had abnormal enzyme levels "indicating cellular damage"; the dogs died when given larger doses. They also knew about a 3M study showing that rhesus monkeys also died when exposed to C-8.
  • 1978: DuPont alerted workers to a 3M Company study showing that its employees were accumulating C-8 in their blood. DuPont studied their own workers, and found increased rates of endocrine disorders. But the findings were not disclosed to regulators, because "they didn't see a substantial risk".
  • 1975: Ocean dumping ceased; Landfill, including rivers and lakes, took over instead. Waste water was dumped directly into the Ohio River; incinerated waste was vented directly to the atmosphere.
  • 1960s: C-8 disposal was a problem due to its toxicity. Around 200 drums were buried on the banks of the Ohio River near the plant. Later, the waste was packed into drums, shipped out to sea, and dumped into the ocean.
  • 1965: Employees were told of studies which showed that even low doses of a C-8 related surfactant could increase the size of rats' livers.
  • 1961: DuPont's researchers found that C-8 was indeed toxic and should be "handled with extreme care".
  • 1954: A French engineer queried DuPont regarding C-8's possibile toxocity.
  • 1951: DuPont started buying PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) from 3M Company for use in the manufacture of Teflon. DuPont internally referred to PFOA as C-8.
  • 1947: Teflon: DuPont registered the trademark.
  • 1937: A scientist was fired, and forbidden to publish research on how dye chemicals led to disease. The company went on to use the chemicals for decades.

EI du Pont de Nemours & Company

Within 18 months of the merger the DowDupont was split into three publicly traded companies with focuses on agriculture (Corteva), materials science (Dow Inc.), and specialty products (DuPont).[2][3][4][7]

  • Jun.2019: § Corteva became a public company, when DowDuPont distributed Corteva shares to its shareholders.[1]
  • Apr.2019: § Dow Inc was spun off from DowDuPont, becoming a publicly-traded company.[2] Its primary subsidiary is The Dow Chemical Company.[3]
  • Aug.2017: § DuPont was formed by the merger of Dow Chemical Company and EI du Pont de Nemours & Company, creating the world's largest chemical company in terms of sales. DowDuPont ranked No.35 on the Fortune 500 list of the largest USA public corporations in 2019.[5] DuPont is headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware.

  • Aug.2017: DowDuPont: DuPont merged with the Dow Chemical Company, in an all-stock deal. The combined company was equally held by the shareholders of both Dow and DuPont.
  • Aug.2015: The slimmed-down DuPont focused on the production of GMO seeds, materials for solar panels, and alternatives to fossil fuels.

neoprene, a synthetic rubber invented by DuPont, is manufactured using chloroprene, which is a likely carcinogen and pollutant. DuPont had decided on 'economic grounds' to continue contaminating the community, although the technology was available to operate the facility safely.

Dow Chemical Company

  • Apr.2009: Rohm & Haas Company, a manufacturer of speciality chemicals for end use markets such as building and construction, electronic devices, packaging, household and personal care products, was acquired.[11]
    • AgroFresh Inc: In 1994, researchers at North Caroline State University discovered 1-MCPWikipedia-W.svg, a synthetic plant growth regulator, used commercially to slow down the ripening of fruit. In 1996, AgroFresh was formed to acquired the 1-MCP technology. In Dec.1999, AgroFresh Inc was formed to develop the technology, marketed as "SmartFresh". In 2007, AgroFresh bought Floralife, gaining exclusive rights to the 1-MCP technology.   • Feb.2001: Union Carbide Corporation, the 5th-largest USA chemical firm, was acquired.[13][14],[54] Union Carbide, based in Danbury, Connecticut, produced specialty chemicals, polymers and solvents for the paint and coatings industry, and plastics used in a range of products. Post-merger, Dow Chemical Company became the world's 2nd-largest chemical company, behind DuPont.[55]

Dow AgroSciences LLC


  • May.2020: Corteva Agriscience announced plans to retire the Mycogen brand after the 2020 growing season; a new brand, "Brevant", would take its place, expanding retailer access to Corteva’s genetic traits and technology.[15]
  • Nov.2015: Oxyfluorfen business, a broad-spectrum herbicide, was sold to Nutrichem Co. Ltd, a supplier of agrochemicals in China. The acquisition included the global registrations, brands, manufacturing information and intellectual property relating to the oxyfluorfen herbicides, including all Goal herbicide brands.[16]

  • Feb.2015: Sodium Borohydride business was sold to Vertellus, a producer of specialty chemicals for the life sciences market and other industrial sectors. Sodium borohydride is used in the synthesis of fine chemicals, including pharmaceutical ingredients and agrochemicals.[17]
  • Nov.2014: Angus Chemical Company, based in Buffalo Grove, Illinois, was sold to private equity firm Golden Gate Capital. The sale included the business headquarters, manufacturing facilities, a research and development facility, a packaging facility and the associated business, customer contracts, process technology, business know-how and certain intellectual property. Angus Chemical Co. is a manufacturer of nitroalkanes, which are widely used in coatings, electronics and water treatment.[18]
    • Oct.2020: French private equity firm Ardian Holding SAS bought a 50% stake in Angus Chemical Co. from Golden Gate Capital.[19],
    • Oct.1999: Dow Chemical Company purchased Angus Chemical Co. from TransCanada Pipelines. In Feb.2001, Dow Biocides. a new business unit, was formed from the merger of the biocides divisions of Angus, Dow Chemical Company, and #Union Carbide Corporation. The new business group doubled Dow's biocides business and created a portfolio of 12 chemistries capable of solving a wide range of bacterial and fungal problems.[20]

  • Jan.2015: Coodetec's Seeds business was acquired, subject to approval by the Brazilian Antitrust Authority. Coodetec was one of Brazil's largest co-ops and marketers of soybean seed, and the acquisition expanded Dow AgroSciences' capabilities in the Americas.[21][22]
  • Jul.2014: Advantage Wheats Pty Ltd, an Australian wheat-breeding company, became a wholly-owned subsidiary.[23] In Sept.2011, Dow AgroSciences had made a major investment in HRZ Wheats Pty Ltd, established in Nov.2003 to develop hardy, high-rainfall-zone wheat varieties.[24] Equity partners were: Dow AgroSciences Australia Ltd; CSIRO, New Zealand’s Plant & Food Research; Landmark Operations Ltd; and the Grains Research and Development Corporation. HRZ Wheats was renamed as Advantage Wheats in Jul.2013.[25]
  • Oct.2012: Rebrand: Dow AgroSciences introduced a new brand and visual identity today, the culmination of a major brand transformation the company has undertaken over the past year. The adoption of the red DOW Diamond logo with the Dow AgroSciences word mark as its new logo more clearly associates the enterprise as a wholly owned subsidiary of The Dow Chemical Company and to Dow’s brand transformation.[26]

Mycogen Corporation was an agricultural biotechnology company focusing on the development of genetically engineered, pest-resistant crop seeds and environmentally safe bioinsecticides. Agrigenetics, Inc., a majority owned subsidiary doing business as Mycogen Plant Sciences, is the 6th largest crop seed company in the USA.   • Feb.1996: DowElanco LLC (a JV between Dow Chemical Company + Eli Lilly & Co.) purchased 37% of Mycogen's common stock formerly owned by the Lubrizol Corporation. Simultaneously, Mycogen issued an additional 9% of its common stock to DowElanco in return for cash and DowElanco's seeds business, United AgriSeeds Inc. (DowElanco, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Dow Chemical Company, changed its name to Dow AgroSciences LLC, effective Jan.01.1998.) The acquisition of UAS strengthened Mycogen's platform for commercializing proprietary, genetically-enhanced seed products. Mycogen and DowElanco also entered into a technology sharing agreement to develop and commercialize input and output traits for major crops. DowElanco continued to purchase additional shares of Mycogen's common stock in the public market and through private transactions and, as of Sept.30.1997, it owned ~57% of Mycogen's common stock.
  • Dec.1995: Pioneer Hi-Bred International Inc: Mycogen entered into a 10-year collaboration with Pioneer to develop insect resistance traits for corn, soybean, canola, sunflower, sorghum and wheat using Mycogen's proprietary Bacillus thuringiensis ("Bt") protein biotoxin and Bt gene synthesis technology. As part of the agreement, Pioneer made a series of equity investments in Mycogen.[50]
  • 1995: Refocus: with its primary focus changing from bioinsecticides to pest-resistant crop seeds, Mycogen reorganized its four seed companies into a single Mycogen Plant Sciences Organization, and consolidated eight brand names, including Jacques, SIGCO, McCurdy, Agrigene, Golden Acres, ORO and Taylor Evans, into a single Mycogen brand.
  • 1995: Delta & Pine Land Company, a cottonseed producer in the Mississippi Delta, sold its corn and sorghum seed business to Mycogen Plant Sciences. Delta & Pine, jointly with the US Dept of Agriculture, developed the "Terminator" technology which makes 'suicide seeds', ie. incapable of reproducing themselves.[51]
  • 1993: Agrigenetics Inc, (dba Mycogen Plant Sciences): Mycogen acquired an additional 30% from Lubrizol. Meanwhile, Lubrizol upped its ownership of Mycogen to 32%.
  • Aug.1992: GMO Joint Venture: Mycogen Corporation (51%) formed a joint venture with Lubrizol Corporation (49%) to buy Lubrizol's seed and plant science unit. The companies planned to work together to develop genetically engineered biological crop pesticides and seed products.[52]
