GRSB is a global, multi-stakeholder initiative, established in 2010, working with the beef industry and environmental groups in order to introduce greater clarity and improve sustainability within the global beef value chain. GRSB’s members fall into 5 sectors: producer, commerce and processing, retail, civil society, and roundtables, as well as observer members.

GRSB does not intend to establish standards or a certification scheme but rather develop a common understanding of what is meant by sustainable beef that can be used by national initiatives and roundtables to meet their commitments. The Principles and Criteria for global sustainable beef establish a global framework for ensuring sustainable beef production,[1] and highlight the main areas in the beef supply chain that must be addressed to promote sustainable production that is both socially responsible and economically viable. [2]

Brazil is the world's 2nd largest beef producer, with the USA in 1st place. Cattle production occupies Brazil's largest land expansion, and accounts for 80% of deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest. Protecting the rainforest is a major problem due to growing demands for food. But there is a solution.

Sustainable Model: Increase production on current land by improving soil quality. Improve animal welfare and well-being.

Supply Chain: Only purchase meat from deforestation-free farms.

Public Policy: Work with govts to adopt policies which promote sustainable land management, and promote low-carbon agriculture.

Market Demand: Inspire consumers to demand that their food meets the above 3 requirements.
